Neonates exposed to venlafaxine (Effexor and Effexor XR, made by Wyeth) late in the third trimester may develop complications immediately upon delivery and require prolonged hospitalization, respiratory support, and tube feeding, according to a warning issued yesterday by MedWatch, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety information and adverse event reporting program. The warning also applies to other serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
