Kelman and colleagues (p 1072) linked hospital records for 5408 patients admitted to hospital with venous thromboembolism to arrival data for international flights during 1981-99 in Western Australia. They conclude that for most passengers the risk of venous thromboembolism after a long haul flight is small and that the average risk of death from flight related venous thromboembolism is around 1 per 2 million flights."
